Our Founding Fathers had every chance to establish a democracy and yet they went out of their way to not only not do so but wrote into the constitution that it would never happen. Article 4, Section 4 requires that "each state maintain a republican form of government" - as opposed to a "democratic" one.

When asked what form of government the Constitutional Convention had given the people, Benjamin Franklin stated, "A Republic, if you can keep it."
We obviously seem to be doing a lousy job lately of "keeping it".
