There is a definite difference between a democracy and a republic, and that difference is the source of its authority. In a democracy the authority is based on strength of number, strength of force. In a republic the authority is a set of principles, unchanging by the whim of a simple majority, and providing an enduring stability.
A democracy is simply the deterioration of a republic -- it is a lazy man's form of government. It requires no effort and no research of candidates or long-term issues; it is simply based on what a majority of the people feel at that given time. A democracy is what Founding Father Benjamin Rush called a "mobocracy." -David Barton, Keys to Good Government, pg. 7
As Republicans we should vigorously promote and defend the constitutionally mandated form of government our Founding Fathers gave us - a republic.
